About the Bears

A Short History of The Bad News Bears Organization

Before the 2005 baseball season began, the National Adult Baseball Association finally opened up a division for the 28 and over players. Chris Kimball, Scott Carter, and Dave Carter, all of whom played with other NABA teams in the 18+ division, decided to form their own 28+ team called the Denver Bad News Bears. Aside from Chris and the Carter Bros., most of the 2005 team was formed through the NABA draft. The key to playing with the Bad News Bears was not only having team spirit, nor the passion to play America's favorite pastime sport, but the willingness and financial sacrifice to pay for the most expensive uniforms in the NABA. Some players drafted by the Bears that season actually went on to go play for other teams who didn't require expensive uniforms. The Bears experienced many growing pains throughout the season in the field and at the plate. The Bears struggled against their division rivals, the Nationals, and the Bohica Warriors but they still managed to go 8-8 in regular season play, and lost in the first round of the playoffs. The Bears team including a number of their core players that are still active, developed a solid cohesiveness and friendship that would lead them into another season of baseball. Not bad for a bunch of guys who never met one another before this season just to play the one game they all love, baseball. For many of the Bears, it wasn't about winning or losing, but just being able to play the game again. The Bears ended 2007 with a rain shortened loss in the 28A division championship game. During the offseason, the Bears needed to reload due to several members of the organization either moving up to the 38s or hanging up their spikes. With some excellent internal recruiting, website leads, and the draft, the Bears were able to put together a solid group of guys. A key event in Bears' history occured before the start of the season. In a recognition of the 2008 economic climate, the Bears redesigned their uniforms to get the same great look at 1/3 the cost. Its early in 2008, but the team is coming together and the results have been very positive on the field.
